Slugdge (Kev Pearson)

Slugdge is a death metal band from Lancashire, UK.

They released their first full-length album in 2013 and have released one album every year since. They have a large fan base who decide to pay for their albums even thought they are free, that has to be a testament to this bands skill.

Zach - "So what is your name & what do you do?"

Slugdge - "Slugdge, we make an odd mixture of melodic death metal and black metal. The name implies that we make sludge metal though, which I'm sure is in there somewhere too."

Zach - "How young were you when you decided you wanted to make music?"

Slugdge - "For me (Kev) about 14. I would ask Matt but he's not here right now. I assume about the same age for him too."

Zach - "Who were some of your influences, musically?"

Slugdge - "I would say Lamb of God had the biggest influence on my guitar playing and riff writing when growing up. I still like them now. More recently I would say I'm influenced pretty heavily by Opeth."

Zach - "Not only is “Slug” in your band name, but slugs can be seen on all your album covers, why slugs?"

Slugdge - "Matt and myself were discussing band names which have used animals in their names and lyrics such as Iron Monkey, Wasp etc. A slug themed sludge band called slugdge seemed inevitable really. It's just a pun, but we ended up taking it way too far because people enjoyed it.

Zach - "You release your albums for free digitally, do you ever plan on charging money for the music?"

Slugdge - "Nope, never! We love that people can decide not to pay and that they can support us out of choice, because they are just music lovers like us. I think we would have done the same had we started a more serious death metal band too. The way music is sold seems to be shifting more towards this kind of thing. If people want to steal your music, they will, y'know? Torrents are so easy to come by now. Charging for it wont stop anyone from using them. Of course, different strategies work for different bands in different genres."

Zach - "You have released one album every year since you started releasing music, is that a schedule you plan on keeping up?"

Slugdge - "When it comes to releasing material we really just go with the flow so to speak . The 2 of us share a house, nothing is rushed, nothing is intentionally drawn out, and when music is ready we release it. We released Dim and Slimeridden Kingdoms at like 1am in the UK, because it was done. We are almost garanteed to make a 4th record and there definitely won't be a time frame on it."

Zach - "Are there any other passions you have apart from music? And if so, what are they?"

Slugdge - "We're both very much into video games. I like to go fishing and I spend a lot of time with my kid. Matt's a huge history buff and enjoys archery. Pretty boring stuff all round from both of us."

Zach - "You have gained a large fan base for being an unsigned band, is being signed to a label something you would be interested in?"

Slugdge - "Again this comes back to the issue of charging money for releases, which a label would almost certainly expect from us. I feel it would make no difference for us being signed, though I understand that's quite rare these days. Labels do solid work especially for touring bands, which we're not, so we feel there's not much need. Even our distrobution deal for CD's and T-shirts was with friends. Though with all that said, if the situation ever presented itself to us, it's one we would take seriously as long as the music remained free and there were no demands on our sound."

Zach - "Are there any genres of music you enjoy apart from metal? Or is it all metal all the time?"

Slugdge - "I quite like hip hop, and I know Matt does too, you would have to prod him personally about exactly what he likes though. We both listen to all sorts though."

Zach - "Do you have any plans in the future for 'Slugdge' you can talk about?"

Slugdge - "None we can discuss I'm afraid. Would love to, but we're still on a bit of a break after writing "Dim And Slimeridden". We're really just in the process of brainstorming ideas for another record. We won't be approaching writing again with a solid set of barriers though, it will be strange and we'll go with whatever sounds good, as we've always done."

Zach - "Thanks for doing this."
